What Is “Prehabilitation”?

Prehabilitation, or “prehab,” is a guided program that helps you build strength, stamina, and confidence before surgery. Instead of waiting until after your operation to start physical therapy, prehab prepares your body ahead of time so recovery is easier and faster.[2][1]

Prehab typically includes three key areas: targeted exercises, breathing and heart–lung conditioning, and basic nutrition guidance. Simple activities like leg and core strengthening, gentle stretching, and walking can improve your circulation, muscle strength, and flexibility before you ever enter the operating room. For many patients, this means less pain and a quicker return to normal activities after surgery.[8][9][1][6][7]

Research has shown that structured prehabilitation can reduce complications, shorten hospital stays, and improve your ability to function after surgery. Patients who participate in prehab are often able to get out of bed, walk, and care for themselves sooner compared with those who do not. Many also report feeling more in control and less anxious, because they know they have actively prepared for what is coming.[9][10][1][7][8][2]

Prehab is not “one size fits all.” Your program is tailored to the type of surgery you are having, your current level of fitness, and other health conditions you may have. For example, someone preparing for a knee replacement might work more on leg strength and balance, while someone getting ready for heart surgery may focus more on walking tolerance and breathing exercises.[10][11][1][7]

Our team will assess your current strength, mobility, and endurance, then design a safe, personalized prehab plan you can follow at home and in the clinic. We will show you exactly what to do, how often to do it, and how to adjust if you have pain or fatigue.[11][7]
